BSF to Trial DRDO’s Ugram Rifle: INSAS Replacement on the Horizon?
The Border Security Force (BSF) is set to evaluate the indigenously developed Ugram 7.62 mm assault rifle, a potential game-changer for its troops. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the larger calibre rifle is being considered as a replacement for the current INSAS rifles.
The BSF has requested ten Ugram rifles, along with the necessary ammunition, for comprehensive field trials. These trials will be crucial in determining the weapon’s suitability for frontline deployment.
The trials will rigorously assess the Ugram’s performance in diverse terrains and operational conditions faced by the BSF along India’s borders. Successful trials could mark a significant step towards enhancing the operational capabilities of the force.
This development holds immense significance for India’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing. A successful induction of the Ugram rifle would reduce dependence on foreign weapon systems and bolster the nation’s security posture. The outcome of these trials will be keenly awaited by defence experts and the nation alike.
