Punjab’s AAP Govt Unveils ₹4,573 Crore Pond Revival Plan
Punjab’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has launched a massive project to rejuvenate 15,000 ponds, locally known as ‘chappars’, across the state’s 13,500 villages. The ambitious undertaking, announced by Rural Development and Panchayats Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond, has been allocated a substantial ₹4,573 crore.
A soft launch of the project was conducted a fortnight ago, marking the commencement of this significant initiative. The government aims to restore these water bodies, improving water availability and boosting rural livelihoods.
The project is expected to significantly impact rural economies, providing employment opportunities and enhancing the ecological balance. Experts believe the revitalization of these ponds will improve groundwater recharge and contribute to sustainable water management in the state.
This ambitious plan, launched on April 21, 2025, reflects the AAP government’s commitment to rural development and environmental sustainability in Punjab. Its success will be crucial in addressing the state’s water challenges and ensuring a brighter future for its villages.
