X vs. India: 2,355 Accounts Blocked, Legal Battle Looms
X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, has alleged that the Indian government directed the blocking of 2,355 accounts on July 3, 2025. This sweeping action reportedly included numerous news outlets.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has strongly refuted these claims. The Ministry insists it did not specifically target international news organisations, such as Reuters.
MeitY further stated that it immediately requested X to reinstate the blocked accounts. They accuse X of deliberately delaying the restoration process.
X, however, has indicated its intention to pursue legal avenues to challenge the government’s actions. This escalating confrontation raises serious concerns about freedom of expression in India’s digital sphere.
The clash highlights the growing tension between social media platforms and governments worldwide over content moderation and censorship. The outcome of this legal battle will significantly impact the future of online journalism and free speech in India.
