Punjab Minister Blasts Opposition, Vows War on Drugs
Punjab’s Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema launched a scathing attack on the opposition parties, including the BJP, Congress, and SAD, on July 10, 2025. He directly accused them of nurturing the growth of gangsters and the drug mafia in the state.
Cheema asserted that successive governments, through their policies or inaction, inadvertently fostered a climate conducive to the flourishing of these criminal elements. He pointed to a pattern of alleged negligence and appeasement that allowed the problem to escalate.
His sharpest criticism was reserved for the BJP, whom he blamed for not transferring notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi to a Punjab jail. This, he argued, hampered ongoing investigations and allowed criminal networks to operate with impunity.
The Minister reiterated the state government’s unwavering commitment to eradicating the drug menace. He vowed to implement stringent measures to dismantle the drug trafficking networks and bring the perpetrators to justice.
This renewed focus on tackling Punjab’s drug problem comes at a crucial time, as the state heads into a period of significant political activity. The upcoming elections and the ongoing battle against organized crime will undoubtedly shape the state’s political landscape in the coming months.
