Delhi-Based Suppliers Fueling Sex-Selective Abortions: Crackdown Ordered
Deputy Commissioner Singh has launched a major crackdown on the illegal supply of abortion-inducing drugs, primarily targeting suppliers based in Delhi. The move follows growing concerns over the continued prevalence of female foeticide in the region.
The crackdown involves intensified surveillance and targeted raids on suspected suppliers. This includes a focused effort to monitor pregnant women through the ‘saheli’ network, a community-based surveillance system.
Stringent prosecution under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act will be ensured for those found guilty. The authorities are also focusing on the misuse of Ayurvedic medicines and the activities of unqualified practitioners.
The operation aims to disrupt the supply chain of banned drugs and curb the alarming trend of sex-selective abortions. The success of this initiative will be crucial in protecting the rights of unborn girls and promoting gender equality in the region. The long-term impact on the skewed sex ratio in the area will be closely monitored.
