Punjab’s Yamuna Water Rights: Cheema Slams Past Governments’ “Betrayal”
Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Cheema has launched a scathing attack on previous state governments, accusing them of neglecting Punjab’s rightful share of Yamuna river waters. He cited a 1954 agreement granting Punjab two-thirds of the river’s flow.
Cheema squarely blamed both Congress and SAD-BJP regimes for failing to protect the state’s water interests. He highlighted concerns over the security of the Bhakra dam and the overall management of the Yamuna river.
The Minister stressed the urgent need for the central government to address the Yamuna water issue before focusing on the Satluj. He emphasized the critical importance of securing Punjab’s water resources for its agricultural and developmental needs.
This renewed focus on Punjab’s water rights comes at a critical juncture, as the state grapples with water scarcity and the need for sustainable water management practices. The political ramifications of this accusation, and the Centre’s response, will be closely watched in the coming weeks.
