SC Plea to Save Kerala Nurse from Yemen Execution
A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking urgent intervention to prevent the execution of Nimisha Priya, a Kerala nurse, scheduled for July 16 in Yemen. Priya was convicted of murdering a Yemeni national in 2017.
The Supreme Court has directed the central government to submit a detailed report on its diplomatic efforts to secure her release.
The report must include specifics on any attempts to explore the possibility of “blood money,” a provision under Sharia law, as a means to commute her sentence.
This case highlights the precarious position of Indian citizens working abroad and the urgent need for stronger diplomatic support in such situations. The government’s response will be crucial in determining whether Priya’s life can be saved and what measures are in place to protect other Indian nationals facing similar risks overseas.
