Delhi Building Collapse Claims Life, DMRC Faces Scrutiny
A tragic incident unfolded in Delhi on Friday, July 11, 2025, when a dilapidated three-story building crumbled, claiming the life of 45-year-old Manoj Sharma. The incident occurred early in the morning.
The building, located near ongoing Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) tunnelling work, had been previously declared unsafe by authorities. Its precarious condition had raised concerns amongst residents.
The DMRC has announced it will conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the collapse and provide compensation to the victim’s family. This follows similar incidents linked to metro construction in the past.
Delhi Police have also launched an investigation under Section 304A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which pertains to causing death by negligence. The investigation will determine if negligence played a role in the incident.
This incident highlights the urgent need for stricter building safety regulations and improved monitoring of construction activities near residential areas, particularly those involving large-scale infrastructure projects. The compensation offered by the DMRC, while important, cannot undo the tragedy and underscores the larger issue of public safety in the city’s rapid development.
