Punjab Assembly adopts resolution against CISF cover at BBMB projects

Punjab Assembly Rejects Centre’s CISF Dam Deployment Plan

The Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Saturday unanimously rejected the central government’s proposal to deploy Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel at dams managed by the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). This strong opposition follows the Centre’s recent decision to station CISF at the Bhakra Dam.

The move comes amidst escalating tensions between Punjab and Haryana over the sharing of river waters. The state government views the CISF deployment as an infringement on its authority and a threat to its water security.

Punjab’s lawmakers argued the deployment was unnecessary and could further complicate the already fraught inter-state water dispute. They asserted the state’s own security forces are capable of protecting the dams.

The resolution passed by the Assembly underscores the deep-seated concerns within Punjab regarding the Centre’s decision. The political fallout from this decision could significantly impact the already strained Centre-State relations. This development carries serious implications for the already fragile water-sharing agreements in the region and threatens to escalate tensions further.
