Punjab’s Stand Halts CISF Housing Project at Nangal
The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has suspended renovations of residential quarters meant for Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel in Nangal. This follows Punjab’s strong opposition to the CISF deployment at the dam.
The planned renovations, estimated at Rs 7.5 crore, aimed to accommodate 142 CISF personnel. However, Punjab, holding a 52% stake in the BBMB, refuses to contribute to the funding requested by the Union Home Ministry.
This deadlock highlights the escalating tension between the state and the Centre over the security arrangements at the strategically crucial Nangal dam. The stalled project leaves the CISF’s housing situation unresolved, raising concerns about operational efficiency.
The dispute underscores the complex interplay between state autonomy and national security concerns, with significant implications for the future management of crucial national assets like the Nangal dam. The resolution of this conflict is crucial for ensuring both the safety of the dam and the welfare of the security personnel.
