Cable Federation Fights DTH Fee Cut: Blow to Local Channels?
The All India Digital Cable Federation (AIDCF) has again urged the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to reconsider the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) proposal to slash license fees for Direct-to-Home (DTH) operators. The letter, sent on July 18, 2025, expresses serious apprehension about the potential impact on the cable industry.
AIDCF argues that reduced license fees for DTH platforms could severely disadvantage cable operators, who already face significant financial pressures. This disparity, they claim, could lead to an uneven playing field and harm smaller, regional channels.
The Federation highlights the crucial role of local cable networks in providing employment and supporting regional content. A significant shift towards DTH could jeopardise these vital contributions to the Indian media landscape.
The Ministry’s response to AIDCF’s concerns will be keenly watched. The decision will have far-reaching consequences for the livelihoods of thousands employed in the cable television sector and the future of regional programming in India.
