Top Court Slams Centre, Maharashtra: Speed Up Special Courts, or Else!
The Supreme Court on Friday sharply criticised the Centre and the Maharashtra government for their failure to establish dedicated special courts to handle cases under special statutes. The court expressed deep concern over the inordinate delays plaguing existing courts burdened with these cases.
The apex court highlighted the significant backlog and the resulting injustice caused by using existing court infrastructure for special cases. This, it argued, compromises the efficiency and timely resolution of ordinary judicial matters.
A four-week deadline has been issued to both the central and state governments. They must submit concrete proposals for setting up new special courts, complete with appropriate infrastructure and adequate staffing. The court emphasised the need for a dedicated judicial mechanism to ensure speedy trials.
This landmark ruling carries significant implications for the Indian judicial system. The pressure on existing courts to handle an ever-increasing workload is a pressing issue. The Supreme Court’s directive underscores the urgent need for systemic reforms to ensure justice is delivered swiftly and efficiently.
