Himachal Farmer’s ‘Gold’ Mangoes: A Risky Gamble on Exotic Fruit

A Himachal Pradesh farmer is making headlines, claiming to have cultivated the world’s priciest mangoes – the Miyazaki – known for their ruby red flesh and exorbitant price tag in Japan. After a two-year wait, his orchard yielded a small harvest.

However, the claim remains unverified. The Horticulture Department is yet to officially authenticate the mangoes as genuine Miyazaki varieties. The farmer, however, remains undeterred.

He invested heavily, importing saplings and meticulously tending to the delicate trees. His gamble extends beyond Miyazaki; he’s also cultivating other rare mango species.

The success, or failure, of this venture holds significant implications for Himachal’s agricultural landscape. It highlights the potential, and inherent risks, of diversifying into high-value, niche crops in the state. Will this bold experiment pay off, or serve as a cautionary tale? Only time will tell.
