Shocking 5.69 Lakh Electricity Bill! Chandigarh Senior Citizen’s Nightmare Resolved
An 80-year-old resident of Sector 44-A, Chandigarh, received an astronomical electricity bill amounting to Rs 5.69 lakh on July 28, 2025. The senior citizen, who had no outstanding dues, immediately reported the discrepancy to the authorities.
The exorbitant bill understandably caused immense distress and confusion. The resident, understandably worried, contacted the Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited (CPDA) to rectify the error.
Investigations by the CPDA revealed a technical glitch as the root cause of the inflated billing. The power distribution company swiftly acknowledged the error.
Following the investigation, the CPDA revised the bill, reducing it to a significantly more manageable Rs 10,000. The corrected bill reflects the actual consumption.
This incident highlights the urgent need for robust error-checking mechanisms within the billing systems of utility providers. Such errors can cause undue hardship, particularly for vulnerable sections of society like senior citizens. Improved technological infrastructure and stringent quality control measures are crucial to prevent future recurrences.
