Supreme Court Slams Punjab & Haryana HC for Two-Year Bail Delay

The Supreme Court on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, sharply criticised the Punjab and Haryana High Court for inordinate delays in hearing a bail plea. The case, involving Jagtar Singh, saw over a dozen adjournments spanning almost two years.

The apex court expressed serious concern over the prolonged delay, highlighting the fundamental right to personal liberty. It underscored the need for sensitivity and expeditious justice in such matters.

A notice has been issued to the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The court has directed him to explain the reasons behind the excessive adjournments.

This ruling carries significant weight, emphasising the judiciary’s responsibility to ensure timely justice and prevent undue hardships for those seeking bail. The case highlights the urgent need for improved efficiency within the High Court’s processes to protect fundamental rights.
