Tewari Slams ‘Extractive’ ITMS: 11-Fold Challan Spike Sparks Fury
Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari has launched a scathing attack on the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), citing an alarming eleven-fold increase in traffic challans. He alleges the system is primarily designed for revenue generation rather than efficient traffic management.
The government, however, defended the ITMS, revealing that over nine lakh challans were issued in 2023 and 2024 alone. This translates to a massive ₹221 crore in fines collected over the past five years.
Tewari’s criticism highlights growing public concern over the perceived exploitative nature of the system. He argues the sharp rise in challans disproportionately burdens citizens.
The Ministry of Home Affairs is reportedly reviewing numerous citizen complaints regarding the ITMS, indicating a growing need for greater transparency and accountability.
This controversy underscores the urgent need for a re-evaluation of the ITMS, ensuring it serves its intended purpose of improving road safety without becoming a tool for excessive revenue generation. The debate highlights the crucial balance between effective traffic management and fair treatment of citizens.
