Civic Body Rejects Steep Community Centre Fee Hike
The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation on Tuesday rejected a proposal for a substantial increase in booking rates for its community centres. Instead, a more modest hike was approved.
This decision followed considerable deliberation within the House. The corporation felt the original proposal was too steep for residents.
A significant concession was also granted, extending free booking privileges to families of martyrs, freedom fighters, and farmers. This move is seen as a gesture of respect and recognition.
The meeting also saw the approval of a plan to outsource the management of gyms and fountains within the community centres to private firms. This is expected to improve maintenance and services.
Other key issues discussed included the ongoing problems at the city’s waste processing plant, the much-needed renovation of the Rose Club, and concerns about worker wages and sanitation standards.
The Corporation also took note of the setbacks faced by the ambitious 24×7 water supply project, a key concern for many residents. The failure to deliver on this project is likely to raise questions about the Corporation’s ability to manage large infrastructure projects. The need for accountability and improved project management is clear.
