India dismisses Pakistan’s UNSC roles as largely symbolic
India on Thursday downplayed Pakistan’s current leadership roles within key United Nations Security Council committees. New Delhi described these positions, including the chairmanship of the 1988 Sanctions Committee and the vice-chairmanship of the Counter-Terrorism Committee, as largely ceremonial.
The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that all decisions within these UN bodies are made by consensus. This effectively limits the unilateral influence any single member, regardless of their official position, can exert.
This statement comes amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan. India’s assertion highlights the limitations of Pakistan’s influence on global security matters despite its formal UN positions. The implications for regional stability and future diplomatic engagements remain to be seen.
