Latur’s Green Revolution: From Drought to Abundance
Latur, Maharashtra, once synonymous with drought, is experiencing a remarkable resurgence. Since 2013, a comprehensive ecological project, spearheaded by The Art of Living Social Projects under Shri Gomare Mahadev, has dramatically altered the region’s fortunes.
Inspired by Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s vision, the initiative focuses on reviving local water sources. This has involved a multi-pronged approach, combining river rejuvenation with extensive plantation drives.
The project extends beyond water conservation. It promotes natural farming techniques, ensuring sustainable agricultural practices and bolstering food security. Climate-resilient fodder cultivation is another key component, safeguarding livestock and livelihoods.
This holistic approach has not only mitigated the impact of droughts but has also created a model for sustainable development in arid regions across India. The success of Latur’s transformation offers a beacon of hope and a replicable blueprint for other drought-prone areas struggling with water scarcity and food insecurity. The lessons learned here are crucial for India’s ongoing battle against climate change and its impact on rural communities.
