Haryana: Rain deficit in paddy belt in July, farmers anxious

Monsoon’s Mixed Blessing: Haryana Rejoices, Farmers Wary

Haryana experienced a varied monsoon spell this July, bringing much-needed respite from the scorching heat. The widespread rainfall proved beneficial for crops like bajra and cotton, boosting farmers’ spirits in several districts.

However, a shadow of concern hangs over paddy cultivation. Below-normal rainfall in key paddy-growing areas such as Karnal has raised anxieties amongst farmers. The situation demands close monitoring.

Conversely, districts like Rohtak and Mahendragarh witnessed significantly above-average rainfall. This uneven distribution poses its own set of challenges.

Farmers now anxiously await August’s rainfall. Prolonged dryness could lead to increased reliance on groundwater, potentially exacerbating depletion concerns. The India Meteorological Department’s prediction of further rainfall offers a glimmer of hope.

The uneven distribution of monsoon rains underscores the vulnerability of Haryana’s agriculture sector to climate variability. The state government needs to strengthen its water management strategies and provide timely support to farmers, particularly those in rain-deficient areas, to mitigate potential crop losses and ensure food security.
