Delhi’s Earthquake, Chemical Drill: City Tests Disaster Readiness
Delhi underwent a major disaster preparedness exercise, “Suraksha Chakra,” on Friday, August 1, 2025. The drill, overseen by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), aimed to evaluate the city’s response capabilities to earthquakes and chemical hazards.
Fifty-five locations across all Delhi districts participated. The exercise rigorously tested emergency response mechanisms, inter-agency coordination, and the effectiveness of public warning systems.
Over twenty city departments were involved in the comprehensive drill, simulating real-life scenarios to identify strengths and weaknesses in the existing disaster management framework.
The findings from “Suraksha Chakra” will be crucial in refining Delhi’s disaster preparedness strategy. Improving response times and inter-agency collaboration are key to minimizing casualties and damage during future emergencies. The exercise highlights the ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and security of Delhi’s citizens.
