Yamuna’s Cry: High Court Orders Joint Action Plan to Curb Sewage Pollution
The Delhi High Court on August 1, 2025, issued a sharp directive to the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). They must jointly formulate a comprehensive action plan to immediately halt the discharge of untreated water from Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) into the Yamuna river.
This landmark order follows a damning report by a Special Committee highlighting severe shortcomings in the city’s sewage management system. The report detailed the significant pollution caused by untreated effluent entering the river.
The court’s intervention also mandates the participation of other key agencies. The Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC) and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) will be integral to this collaborative effort.
The High Court’s decision underscores the urgent need for coordinated action to protect the Yamuna. The success of this joint plan will be crucial not only for the river’s ecological health but also for the millions of Delhiites who depend on it directly or indirectly. The implementation of this plan will be closely monitored, with the court expecting tangible results in the coming months.
