Gurugram’s Wrong-Way Drive Crackdown: 14,000 Fined, Lakhs Collected
Gurugram traffic police launched a major crackdown on wrong-side driving in July, issuing over 14,000 challans and collecting a hefty Rs 79.2 lakh in fines. The penalty for this dangerous practice has been increased to Rs 5,500.
This aggressive enforcement follows a concerning trend. Wrong-side driving accounts for a significant 15% of fatal road accidents in the city.
The police have identified 80 notorious locations where this violation is most prevalent. Increased vigilance and stricter penalties are being implemented at these hotspots.
The initiative is a crucial step towards improving road safety in Gurugram, but sustained public awareness campaigns are equally vital to changing driver behaviour and preventing further tragic accidents. The high number of fines reflects the scale of the problem and the need for continuous efforts to curb this reckless practice.
