GNDU VC Axed from Jathedar Appointment Panel: SGPC Cites Controversial Video

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on August 1, 2025, removed Guru Nanak Dev University’s Vice-Chancellor from the committee tasked with appointing the next Akal Takht Jathedar.

This decision followed the emergence of a video allegedly showing the VC linking Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s philosophy with Vedanta during an event attended by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat.

The university’s Vice-Chancellor vehemently denied the allegations, asserting that the video had been selectively edited and misrepresented his statements. He maintained his stance that his remarks were taken out of context.

The SGPC, however, deemed the video’s content objectionable and deemed the VC’s presence on the crucial appointment panel inappropriate. This move has sparked considerable debate within religious and academic circles in Punjab.

The controversy highlights the sensitive nature of religious interpretations and the ongoing tensions between various groups in the state. The upcoming Jathedar appointment now carries even greater significance, given the political and social ramifications involved.
