Hasina Trial: Bangladesh Seeks India’s Help in Extradition
Bangladesh’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) ministry initiated an in-absentia trial against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 3, 2025. The charges relate to alleged crimes against humanity during the 2024 student protests.
The prosecution alleges that Hasina, while in office, ordered a violent crackdown on the protests, resulting in numerous deaths. Several former government officials face trial alongside her, with at least one having turned approver.
Hasina, currently residing in India, is accused of orchestrating the brutal suppression of dissent. The Bangladeshi government has formally requested her extradition from India.
The trial’s commencement has ignited a significant diplomatic challenge between Dhaka and Delhi. The outcome will have profound implications for regional stability and bilateral relations. India’s response to Bangladesh’s extradition request will be keenly observed.
