Bangladesh tribunal begins Hasina’s trial for crimes against humanity

Hasina’s In-Absentia Trial: 1400 Deaths Haunt Bangladesh’s Past

Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) commenced an in-absentia trial against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 3, 2025. The charges relate to alleged crimes against humanity during the 2024 protests.

Several former government officials are co-accused in this significant case. The prosecution alleges that Hasina ordered a violent crackdown leading to the deaths of approximately 1,400 people.

Sheikh Hasina and another key accused, Kamal, remain in self-imposed exile. Interestingly, Mamun, another implicated individual, has turned state witness.

The trial has ignited fresh protests across the country. Student groups and activists affiliated with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) have staged rallies, demanding justice and accountability.

This trial carries immense political weight, potentially reshaping Bangladesh’s political landscape and reigniting long-simmering tensions. The outcome will undoubtedly have far-reaching consequences for the nation’s fragile political stability and its journey towards reconciliation.
