Beas River Rampage: Kapurthala Farmlands Submerged, Farmers Cry Foul

Flash floods originating from the Chakki Mirthal area caused the Beas River to swell dramatically on August 3, 2025, inundating vast swathes of farmland in Kapurthala district. The worst affected areas were Dhilwan and Sultanpur Lodhi.

Temporary embankments, erected to protect the fields, proved inadequate against the surging waters. These gave way, leading to widespread submergence of standing crops.

Farmers are reeling from the significant losses suffered. They are demanding immediate government assistance to mitigate their losses and urging long-term investment in flood prevention infrastructure.

District officials, while expressing sympathy, expect the floodwaters to recede swiftly. However, the scale of damage and the urgent need for relief measures remain pressing concerns. The incident highlights the vulnerability of Punjab’s agrarian heartland to extreme weather events and the need for robust disaster preparedness.
