Cosmetics Safety Overhaul: New Rules Tighten Norms
India has significantly amended its cosmetics regulations, bolstering safety and transparency across the industry. The changes, effective immediately, aim to protect consumers from potentially harmful products.
Key improvements include clearer labeling requirements. “Use before” and expiry dates must be prominently displayed on all products.
Mandatory batch testing has been introduced, ensuring consistent quality control throughout production. Manufacturers are also required to maintain meticulous records of their production processes.
The Central Drugs Laboratory will now act as the central testing facility for all cosmetic products, ensuring uniformity in testing standards.
Export-oriented units will receive some regulatory flexibility, recognising the unique demands of the international market. However, basic safety and labelling standards remain mandatory.
These strengthened regulations are a crucial step towards building consumer trust and ensuring the safety of the burgeoning Indian cosmetics market. The move is expected to improve India’s standing in the global cosmetics arena, while also protecting domestic consumers from sub-standard products.
