Nabha Couple Faces Village Ostracism After 2016 Elopement

A Punjab village is embroiled in controversy following the return of a couple who eloped in 2016. Taranjeet Singh and Dilpreet Kaur, residents of Nabha, are facing a social boycott orchestrated by the village panchayat.

The panchayat, citing concerns about the “wrong message” sent by the couple’s actions, passed a resolution formalising the boycott on August 3, 2025. This decision has sparked outrage amongst many.

Singh and Kaur, however, remain defiant. They intend to pursue legal avenues to combat the harassment they are facing at the hands of the village community.

Adding a layer of complexity to the situation, the local Member of Parliament has publicly voiced support for the couple, condemning the panchayat’s actions.

This incident highlights the persistent challenges faced by couples exercising their right to choose their partners, particularly in rural areas where traditional social norms often hold significant sway. The legal battle ahead will be a crucial test of the legal framework’s ability to protect individual rights against community pressure.
