Chandigarh Traders Threaten Exodus Over Unresolved Issues
Chandigarh’s business community, represented by the Chamber of Business and Merchants (CBM), sounded a strong warning on August 5, 2025, during the All India Udyog Beopar Mandal’s foundation day. Their concerns, voiced forcefully, centred on several critical issues impacting their livelihoods.
The CBM highlighted the urgent need for effective solutions to Value Added Tax (VAT) assessments. They also demanded a review of building bylaws, deemed restrictive to business expansion.
Establishment of a dedicated Trade Board for Chandigarh and a GST tribunal within the city were also among the key demands. The absence of these mechanisms, the CBM argued, creates significant hurdles for businesses.
Failure to address these concerns, the traders warned, could lead to a mass exodus of businesses from Chandigarh, severely impacting the city’s economy and employment. The potential economic fallout necessitates immediate government attention.
