Stubble Burning Down, But Delhi’s Air Still Chokes
Punjab and Haryana have witnessed a dramatic reduction in stubble burning incidents since 2021. The decrease stands at an impressive 85% in Punjab and 80% in Haryana.
However, despite this significant progress, Punjab alone recorded over 10,000 stubble burning cases last year. This highlights the ongoing challenge in completely eradicating the practice.
The air pollution crisis in the Delhi-NCR region is a complex issue with multiple contributing factors. Stubble burning remains a significant contributor, though the government is actively tackling it.
Measures undertaken include stricter enforcement, financial aid for farmers to buy modern agricultural machinery, and comprehensive policy changes.
The fight for cleaner air continues, demanding sustained efforts from both the government and the farming community. The lingering high number of cases in Punjab underscores the need for more robust and effective long-term solutions to safeguard the health of millions in the Delhi-NCR region and beyond.
