Headline: GST Sleuths Unearth Mammoth Rs 7.08 Lakh Crore Tax Evasion
Central GST field officers have unearthed a staggering Rs 7.08 lakh crore in tax evasion over the past five years (2020-2025). This includes a significant Rs 1.79 lakh crore attributed to fraudulent Input Tax Credit (ITC) claims.
The scale of the problem is alarming. In the financial year 2025 alone, a massive Rs 2.23 lakh crore in tax evasion was detected. Of this, Rs 58,772 crore stemmed from ITC fraud.
Despite the massive evasion, voluntary tax deposits have yielded a significant recovery of over Rs 1.29 lakh crore.
This revelation highlights the urgent need for strengthening GST enforcement mechanisms and improving compliance. The government’s focus on technology-driven audits and stricter penalties will be crucial in curbing future tax evasion and safeguarding national revenue. The impact on public services funded by these revenues underscores the gravity of the situation.
