Shrinking Clothes: A Common Woe, Simple Solutions

Clothes shrinking after a wash is a frustratingly common problem faced by many Indians. The culprit? The very fibres that make up our garments.

Natural fabrics like cotton and linen, being cellulose-based, are prone to swelling and contracting with exposure to water and heat. Wool, on the other hand, shrinks due to its fibres becoming entangled.

Synthetic materials fare better, exhibiting greater dimensional stability. The process of washing, with its heat, moisture, and agitation, exacerbates the issue, causing fibres to relax and return to their natural, crinkled state.

So, what can you do? A simple remedy involves soaking the shrunken garment in lukewarm water with fabric conditioner. Gently stretch the item back to its original size while it’s still damp.

This age-old problem impacts household budgets and consumer choices. Understanding the science behind shrinking clothes empowers us to better care for our garments and reduce textile waste, ultimately benefiting both our wallets and the environment.
