Chandigarh Traffic Police to Prioritize Education Over Penalties

The Chandigarh Traffic Police is set to overhaul its approach to traffic management, shifting its focus from revenue generation through challans to education and regulation, as announced on August 5, 2025. This decision follows widespread complaints regarding unprofessional conduct by traffic personnel and a significant surge in automated challans.

The Director General of Police (DGP) initiated this change in strategy, acknowledging public concerns. The new emphasis will be on educating drivers about road safety and responsible driving practices.

Automated challan systems will be used less frequently. Manual challans will be reserved for serious traffic violations, such as reckless driving and blatant disregard for traffic rules.

This strategic shift is expected to improve road safety and foster a more positive relationship between the police and the public. The long-term impact on road accidents and public perception of the traffic police remains to be seen, but the move signals a much-needed reform in how traffic violations are handled in the city. The success of this initiative will depend heavily on the implementation and effectiveness of the educational programs rolled out by the police.
