Himachal Flash Flood: 413 Kailash Yatris Rescued in Dramatic Operation
A sudden flash flood in Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur district on August 6, 2025, trapped hundreds of pilgrims undertaking the challenging Kinnaur Kailash Yatra. The surging waters cut off access to the remote trekking route, leaving many stranded and in need of urgent assistance.
Following a distress call from the Kinnaur district administration, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) swiftly launched a rescue operation.
Using specialised rope-based techniques, the brave rescuers battled challenging terrain and adverse weather conditions to reach the stranded pilgrims. A total of 413 yatris were successfully brought to safety.
The incident highlights the inherent risks associated with high-altitude treks in the Himalayas, particularly during the monsoon season. Authorities are reviewing safety protocols for future yatras, emphasising the importance of preparedness and timely response to emergencies in such vulnerable regions. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for robust disaster management infrastructure in these areas to safeguard pilgrims and tourists.
