SC Orders Matheran’s Rickshaw Revolution: E-rickshaws to Replace Human-Powered Carts
The Supreme Court has issued a landmark order directing the Maharashtra government to replace all hand-pulled rickshaws in Matheran with electric alternatives within six months. The court deemed the current system “inhuman,” citing a violation of fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution.
The ruling, delivered on August 6, 2025, emphasizes the need for social justice and directs the state to facilitate a smooth transition. The court’s mandate includes providing e-rickshaws to those currently employed as rickshaw pullers.
The order also clarifies that paver blocks will be allowed only on designated routes within the hill station. This decision aims to balance modernization with environmental concerns and the preservation of Matheran’s unique character.
This significant judgment highlights the judiciary’s commitment to upholding the dignity of labour and ensuring a more equitable future for vulnerable workers. The successful implementation of this order will not only improve the lives of rickshaw pullers but also set a precedent for similar transitions across India.
