US Tariff on Indian Imports: A Double Standard?

The Global Trade Research Institute (GTRI) on Wednesday slammed the United States’ decision to impose a 25 per cent tariff on certain Indian imports, terming it hypocritical. The Institute highlighted a perceived double standard in Washington’s approach to trade relations with Moscow.

GTRI pointed out the US’s seemingly lenient stance towards some allies and its contrasting aggressive approach towards India. This selective application of tariffs, the Institute argued, raises serious questions about fairness and consistency in US trade policy.

The additional tariffs, effective August 6, 2025, are expected to impact several key Indian export sectors. This move comes amidst already strained trade relations between the two nations.

The GTRI’s statement underscores growing concerns amongst Indian policymakers regarding the unpredictable nature of US trade policy and its potential impact on India’s economic growth. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for India to diversify its export markets and strengthen its domestic economy.
