Thakur Barred from BFI Polls: Election in Jeopardy
Union Minister Anurag Thakur has been deemed ineligible to contest the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) elections. This decision, announced Wednesday, August 6, 2025, stems from alleged violations of the BFI constitution.
The key reason cited is Mr. Thakur’s lack of elected membership in the Himachal Pradesh Boxing Association (HPBA). His current position as a Union Minister also disqualifies him, according to the ruling body.
Another nominee also faced rejection, further complicating the already tense electoral process. The elections, under the supervision of a World Boxing interim committee, are scheduled to conclude by August 31, 2025. This development casts a shadow over the timely completion of the elections.
The disqualification of a prominent figure like Mr. Thakur raises serious questions about the transparency and fairness of the BFI electoral process. The upcoming deadline adds pressure to find a suitable replacement and ensure a smooth transition for the national boxing body. The impact on Indian boxing’s future participation in international events remains a key concern.
