Governor’s Nod Sought: Himachal’s Tribal Land Rights Hang in Balance

Himachal Pradesh Revenue Minister, Mr. Negi, met with the Governor on August 6, 2025, to address critical issues impacting the tribal regions of Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti. The primary concern revolves around the long-delayed allotment of nautor land to tribal residents.

A staggering 20,000 applications for land allocation remain pending, creating significant hardship for the affected communities. This delay stems from bureaucratic hurdles and legal complexities.

The crux of the matter lies in the need for the Governor to suspend the Forest Conservation Act to facilitate the land distribution process. This crucial step is seen as essential to resolving the decades-old land rights issue.

The meeting assumes immense significance given the socio-economic implications for thousands of tribal families. A timely resolution is crucial to ensure their livelihood and prevent further social unrest in these already vulnerable regions. The Governor’s decision will have far-reaching consequences for Himachal Pradesh’s tribal welfare policies.
