Matheran’s Hand-Rickshaws to Go Electric: SC Orders Humane Switch
The Supreme Court has directed the Maharashtra government to replace all hand-pulled rickshaws in Matheran with electric alternatives within six months. The August 6th ruling deemed the current practice inhumane, citing the arduous nature of the work for rickshaw pullers.
The court’s order mandates a comprehensive scheme mirroring a successful Gujarat model. This involves providing e-rickshaws to the current rickshaw pullers, ensuring their livelihoods are not jeopardised during the transition.
The decision underscores the judiciary’s commitment to social justice and environmental protection, particularly within the ecologically sensitive Matheran hill station. The transition to e-rickshaws is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions and improve the overall environment.
This landmark judgement sets a crucial precedent for other hill stations across India grappling with similar issues of human exploitation and environmental sustainability. The successful implementation in Matheran will serve as a vital model for future initiatives nationwide, potentially improving the lives of thousands of rickshaw pullers while safeguarding fragile ecosystems.
