Khelo India Dream Shattered: Age Row Rocks Chandigarh Hockey Academy
Five promising young hockey players from the prestigious Chandigarh Hockey Academy saw their dreams of competing in the Khelo India trials dashed on account of age verification discrepancies. The issue came to light on August 6, 2025, leaving parents and players deeply distraught.
The Sports Department, citing Sports Authority of India (SAI) regulations, insisted on Aadhaar-based age verification. This, however, created a discrepancy in application of standards, as the academy had seemingly accepted the players’ ages for years.
The abrupt declaration of ineligibility, after years of training and selection, has raised serious questions about the transparency and consistency of the selection process. Parents are now demanding a thorough investigation into the matter.
The incident highlights a growing concern regarding the implementation of age verification rules in youth sports. The lack of clarity and inconsistent application of rules can severely impact the careers of young athletes, undermining their dedication and hard work. The demand for accountability from the relevant authorities is growing louder. This case underscores the urgent need for clear, consistent, and transparent age verification policies to protect the interests of aspiring young sportspersons.
