Taiwan attends Hiroshima Peace Ceremony for first time in 80 Years

Hiroshima Remembrance: Taiwan’s Presence Underscores Regional Solidarity

Lee Yi-yang, head of the Taiwan-Japan Relations Association in Tokyo, stood amongst thousands at Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park on August 6, 2025. His presence, amongst approximately 55,000 attendees, highlighted the growing cooperation between Taiwan and Japan.

The solemn ceremony, commemorating the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing, saw the participation of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. The event served as a powerful reminder of the devastating consequences of nuclear warfare.

Yi-yang’s inclusion underscores the deepening ties between Taiwan and Japan, particularly in the face of shared regional security concerns. This symbolic gesture carries significant weight in the current geopolitical climate. The event’s impact resonates far beyond Hiroshima, emphasizing the urgent need for global nuclear disarmament and peaceful conflict resolution.
