Pong Dam’s Overflow: Flood Alert for Beas River Basin
The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, released a significant volume of water from the Pong Dam, prompting flood warnings downstream. A total of 27,300 cusecs were discharged – 23,300 cusecs through spillways and 4,000 cusecs through turbines.
This unprecedented release followed a sharp increase in water inflow, pushing the reservoir level to an alarming 1373.19 feet. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
The BBMB has activated its flood control mechanisms. Warnings are being issued, and hooters are being used to alert residents in low-lying areas along the Beas River.
This incident underscores the urgent need for robust flood preparedness measures in the Beas River basin, particularly with the unpredictable monsoon patterns impacting the region. The timely warnings issued by the BBMB are crucial in mitigating potential damage and ensuring the safety of local communities.
