DU Elections: Crackdown on Defacement, Hefty Bond for Candidates
Delhi University has tightened its grip on campaigning ahead of the upcoming DUSU elections, introducing stringent anti-defacement guidelines. Candidates will now be required to submit mandatory affidavits promising adherence to the new rules.
These regulations include the creation of designated “walls of democracy” for campaigning material. Any defacement of public or private property will attract heavy penalties.
A significant deterrent is the imposition of a Rs 1 lakh bond for each candidate. This bond will be forfeited in case of violations. Rallies and certain campaigning methods are also restricted.
Penalties for violating the guidelines range from hefty fines to complete disqualification from the elections. The University administration hopes these measures will ensure a cleaner and more orderly election process.
This move comes amidst growing concerns about environmental damage and the disruption caused by uncontrolled campaigning in previous elections. The effectiveness of these stringent measures in achieving a cleaner electoral process remains to be seen, and will be closely watched by students and observers alike.
