Bhakra Dam Under CISF Guard: Punjab’s Rs 100 Crore Standoff
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) will secure the Bhakra Dam starting August 31, despite strong opposition from the Punjab government. This decision comes despite the significant annual cost, exceeding Rs 100 crore.
Punjab has refused to bear its share of the expenditure for the CISF deployment. The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) will therefore shoulder the entire financial burden, including accommodation and weaponry for the security personnel.
The move signals a broader security upgrade for crucial BBMB installations. The CISF deployment at Bhakra Dam is expected to be followed by similar measures at other vital infrastructure sites under the BBMB’s purview.
This escalating security cost and the inter-state disagreement highlight the growing vulnerability of India’s critical infrastructure and the urgent need for robust national security strategies, particularly in the face of potential threats. The financial implications and the political fallout will undoubtedly dominate discussions in the coming weeks.
