Bus services hit as 8,000 contractual employees of PRTC observe strike

Punjab Bus Strike Strands Thousands Amidst Monsoon Mayhem

Thousands of commuters across Punjab faced immense hardship on August 14, 2025, as a massive strike by approximately 8,000 contractual employees of the Pepsu Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) and Punbus brought the state’s public transport system to a grinding halt.

The strike, encompassing 27 depots across the state, resulted in the complete suspension of government-run bus services. Passengers were left stranded, many battling heavy rain to secure alternative transport.

Reports from across Punjab detail scenes of chaos at bus stands, with commuters scrambling for seats on overcrowded private buses. The situation highlighted the critical role of PRTC and Punbus in the state’s transportation network.

The striking employees are demanding better wages and improved working conditions. Their protest underscores the growing concerns regarding the welfare of contractual workers in the public sector.

This widespread disruption serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of Punjab’s public transport system and the potential consequences of unresolved labour disputes. The government needs to urgently address the employees’ grievances to prevent future disruptions and ensure smooth public transportation for citizens.
