GMADA Faces Property Seizure Over Unitech Land Deal
The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) is facing the attachment of its Local Area Committee (LAC) office property. This follows a court order mandating the payment of enhanced land compensation to landowners in Sectors 97, 106, and 107.
The dispute originates from a 2013 land acquisition for a Unitech project. The court ruled in favour of the landowners, ordering GMADA to pay Rs 2.39 crore per acre as compensation.
GMADA had challenged the court’s decision, but its objections were overruled. The authority now faces the prospect of property seizure unless the outstanding payment is made.
This case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by land acquisition authorities in balancing development needs with fair compensation for affected landowners. The incident underscores the need for transparent and efficient land acquisition processes to avoid protracted legal battles and financial burdens on public bodies. The implications for future development projects in the region remain a key concern.
