Himachal Reels Under Monsoon Fury: Shimla Faces River Rage, Evacuations Underway
Heavy rainfall continued to lash Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, prompting a yellow warning for several districts. The relentless downpour caused the Sutlej River to swell, resulting in widespread inundation in parts of Shimla.
Authorities were forced to undertake evacuation efforts in several low-lying areas as the river breached its banks. The rising water levels also impacted crucial infrastructure.
Numerous roads remain blocked, hindering rescue and relief operations. Power supply has also been severely disrupted with several distribution transformers submerged. Water supply schemes in affected areas have been crippled.
Naina Devi bore the brunt of the rainfall, recording an impressive 136 mm of precipitation. The meteorological department has cautioned residents to remain vigilant.
This latest spell of intense rainfall underscores the vulnerability of Himachal Pradesh’s infrastructure to extreme weather events. The state government needs to urgently review its disaster preparedness plans, focusing on improved flood mitigation and early warning systems to safeguard lives and livelihoods.
