SC Raps MCD Over Shaikh Ali Gumti Neglect; Commissioner Summoned
The Supreme Court on Thursday pulled up the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Commissioner for the deplorable sanitation conditions near the 500-year-old Shaikh Ali Gumti. The court expressed serious concern over the failure to remove accumulated debris around the historical monument.
The apex court’s strong rebuke stemmed from a public interest litigation highlighting the poor maintenance and sanitation issues affecting the site. The judges warned the Commissioner of potential contempt proceedings if immediate action wasn’t taken.
In response, the MCD Commissioner assured the court of swift action to clear the debris and implement a daily maintenance plan for the area. The court has adjourned the hearing to September 18, 2025, to assess the progress made.
This case underscores the urgent need for better preservation of India’s historical heritage and the accountability of civic bodies in upholding their responsibilities towards protecting such significant landmarks. The court’s intervention serves as a crucial reminder of the need for effective urban planning and maintenance to safeguard our cultural legacy.
