Preservation of Shaikh Ali ‘Gumti’: SC summons MCD Commissioner for failing to remove debris

SC Raps MCD Over Tomb Debris: Contempt Looms

The Supreme Court on Thursday sharply reprimanded the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Commissioner for the continued presence of debris near a historical tomb. The court expressed its strong displeasure over the lack of action, hinting at potential inter-agency ego clashes between the MCD and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Justice highlighted the unacceptable delay in clearing the debris, jeopardizing the historical site’s preservation. The court’s warning of contempt proceedings sent shockwaves through the civic body.

The MCD Commissioner, appearing before the court, assured immediate action to remove the debris and restore cleanliness to the area. He pledged swift implementation of a comprehensive cleaning plan.

The Supreme Court adjourned the case until September 18, 2025, giving the MCD a clear deadline to demonstrate tangible progress. Failure to comply could result in serious consequences, including contempt of court.

This case underscores the urgent need for better inter-agency coordination in preserving India’s rich historical heritage. The SC’s firm stance sends a strong message about accountability and the importance of protecting our national monuments.
